Website Development Cost in India: A Practical 2026 Guide

If you are planning a new business website, one of your first questions will probably be: “How much does website development cost in India?”

The honest answer is that a website can cost anywhere from a few thousand rupees for a basic DIY or template setup to several lakhs for a professionally designed business website. Custom eCommerce stores, portals, dashboards and web applications can cost considerably more.

For initial planning, a professionally delivered small-business website may fall anywhere between approximately ₹50,000 and ₹3,00,000. A highly customized website, eCommerce store or web application can move well beyond that range.

These are broad market-planning estimates, not fixed prices or my personal rate card. The final quotation depends on what needs to be designed, developed, integrated, tested and supported.

Current market research also shows considerable pricing variation. A 2026 GoodFirms survey of Indian web-development companies found different price bands based on project size, technology and provider type. Clutch’s website budgeting guide similarly identifies functionality, custom design, project size and ongoing maintenance as major cost factors.

The important question is therefore not simply, “What is the cheapest website I can get?”

A better question is:

What website does my business need, what should be included, and what is a reasonable budget for that scope?

Quick website development cost estimates in India

The following ranges can help you establish an initial budget before requesting quotations.

Website typeIndicative planning rangeUsually suitable for
DIY or simple template websiteUnder ₹30,000Personal profiles, temporary websites and very small businesses
Custom landing page₹15,000–₹60,000Advertising campaigns, service launches and lead generation
Small business website₹50,000–₹3,00,000Consultants, service providers, startups and local businesses
Custom WordPress or CMS website₹2,00,000–₹12,00,000Growing businesses requiring custom design, templates and structured content
eCommerce website₹5,00,000–₹25,00,000+Retailers, D2C brands and businesses selling online
Web portal or custom application₹8,00,000–₹50,00,000+Dashboards, CRMs, customer portals and custom operational systems

These ranges deliberately overlap. An experienced freelancer may quote below agency-market ranges, while an agency with separate design, development, testing and project-management teams may quote significantly more.

A five-page template website and a five-page custom website are not the same product simply because they contain the same number of pages.

Why do website-development quotations vary so much?

Website prices vary because the word “website” can describe many different products.

A single-page service website, a 500-product Shopify store and a custom client portal are all websites, but the work required to build them is completely different.

The following factors have the greatest effect on website development cost in India.

1. The purpose of the website

The website’s business purpose should be defined before selecting a platform or requesting a quotation.

A website may need to:

  • Present a company professionally
  • Generate service enquiries
  • Sell physical or digital products
  • Accept appointment bookings
  • Publish articles and resources
  • Manage members or customers
  • Display real-time data
  • Connect with a CRM or another business system
  • Provide a custom dashboard
  • Support internal operational workflows

A simple informational website requires fewer features than an eCommerce store or database-driven portal.

If the purpose is unclear, quotations will either be inaccurate or include large contingency margins.

2. Page count and content structure

Page count affects the amount of design, development, content entry and testing required.

A basic business website might contain:

  • Home
  • About
  • Services
  • Individual service pages
  • Portfolio or case studies
  • Blog
  • Contact
  • Privacy policy
  • Terms and conditions

A business with six separate services should usually consider individual service pages rather than placing every service on one long page. This creates additional work, but it also gives visitors clearer information and gives the website a better content structure.

The quotation should clarify whether the developer is responsible for:

  • Writing the content
  • Editing client-provided content
  • Uploading the content
  • Sourcing images
  • Optimizing images
  • Creating graphics
  • Migrating old pages
  • Formatting blog posts

“Ten pages included” is not enough detail unless both parties understand what will go into those pages.

3. Template design versus custom design

A template-led website starts with an existing theme or layout. It can reduce the initial cost and delivery time, especially when the business has straightforward requirements.

The disadvantages are that it may:

  • Look similar to other websites
  • Include unnecessary styles or functionality
  • Provide limited design flexibility
  • Require compromises around the brand
  • Become difficult to maintain if heavily modified

A custom-designed website takes longer because its layout, components and responsive behaviour are planned around the business.

Custom design is usually more appropriate when:

  • The website represents an established brand
  • Marketing campaigns will direct traffic to it
  • The business has several services or customer groups
  • The website needs a distinctive visual identity
  • Conversion paths need careful planning
  • Reusable page sections are required

Custom does not automatically mean better. A clean, well-configured template can outperform a poorly planned custom build. The decision should depend on the business requirement rather than the label.

4. The selected platform

The platform affects both the initial cost and the ongoing cost.

WordPress

WordPress is often suitable for business websites, blogs, service pages, landing pages and content-heavy websites.

The WordPress software itself can be used without a licence fee, but the total project may still include hosting, premium plugins, themes, security tools and maintenance. The official WordPress feature overview explains its publishing, theme, plugin and content-management capabilities.

WordPress may be a good choice when the marketing team needs to edit pages, publish blogs and manage content without depending on a developer for every change.

Shopify

Shopify is designed specifically for eCommerce. Its development cost may include theme configuration, custom sections, product setup, collection structure, filters, payment configuration, shipping and app integrations.

Shopify also has an ongoing platform subscription. At the time of writing, its official Indian pricing page lists the Basic plan at ₹1,499 per month when billed annually or ₹1,994 when paid monthly. Plans and offers can change, so businesses should always check the current Shopify India pricing before budgeting.

React or Next.js

React and Next.js may be appropriate for custom user interfaces, dashboards, portals and application-style websites.

They can provide greater control over functionality and architecture, but content management, hosting, authentication and backend requirements must be planned separately.

Using React for a simple five-page website may add unnecessary complexity. Using a basic page builder for a complex operational platform may create a different set of limitations.

The right platform is the one that fits the actual requirement.

5. Features and third-party integrations

Functionality often affects the quotation more than page count.

Features that may increase the cost include:

  • Appointment booking
  • Payment gateway integration
  • Advanced contact or quotation forms
  • User login and registration
  • Membership functionality
  • Product filters
  • Custom checkout behaviour
  • Multilingual content
  • Location search
  • CRM integration
  • WhatsApp integration
  • Email-marketing integration
  • API connections
  • Custom reports
  • Role-based dashboards
  • AI chatbot functionality

Each integration also needs testing. Adding a payment gateway is not just a matter of displaying a payment button; the developer may need to account for failed payments, confirmation messages, order status, mobile behaviour and notification delivery.

6. Responsive design and testing

A business website should work properly across mobile phones, tablets and desktop screens.

Testing may include:

  • Responsive layout checks
  • Navigation testing
  • Form submissions
  • Button and link checks
  • Browser compatibility
  • Image optimization
  • Accessibility basics
  • Page-speed testing
  • Error-page testing
  • Analytics verification
  • Payment or checkout testing

Google provides PageSpeed Insights for reviewing performance and Core Web Vitals. These measurements do not guarantee traffic, rankings or conversions, but they help identify technical and user-experience problems.

A quotation that only covers “website development” without mentioning testing may leave an important part of the project undefined.

What should a professional website quotation include?

A useful quotation should explain what you are receiving, not just show one final number.

Look for the following items:

AreaWhat should be clarified
DiscoveryRequirements, target audience, goals and sitemap
UI/UXTemplate customization or original design
PagesExact number and type of pages
DevelopmentPlatform, theme, custom code and functionality
ContentWho writes, edits, uploads and formats it
Responsive workMobile, tablet and desktop coverage
IntegrationsForms, payments, CRM, APIs and analytics
SEO foundationMetadata fields, sitemap and basic technical structure
TestingBrowsers, devices, forms, links and functionality
LaunchHosting configuration, domain connection and deployment
TrainingCMS or store-management handover
SupportBug-fix period and ongoing maintenance
OwnershipDomain, hosting, code, design assets and accounts

If two developers provide very different quotations, compare these deliverables line by line. The lower quotation may simply include fewer services.

Need help defining the scope?

If you know you need a new website but are unsure about the platform, page list or features, review my website development services for WordPress, Shopify and full-stack builds.

A short description of your business, current website, required pages and desired functionality is usually enough to begin a practical scope discussion.

Costs that are often excluded from the initial quotation

The development quotation may not represent the complete cost of owning and operating the website.

Ask whether the following expenses are included.

Domain and hosting

Your domain and hosting are normally recurring costs.

The required hosting depends on the website’s technology, traffic, storage, security and performance requirements. The cheapest shared hosting plan may be sufficient for a small informational website but unsuitable for a busy eCommerce store or custom web application.

Ideally, the domain and hosting accounts should be registered under the business owner’s control.

Premium themes, plugins and applications

WordPress plugins, Shopify applications, booking systems and other third-party products may charge monthly or annual fees.

Ask:

  • Which paid tools are required?
  • Who owns the licences?
  • What will they cost at renewal?
  • What happens if a subscription is cancelled?
  • Is there a simpler alternative?

A website with a low initial build cost can become expensive if it depends on several paid applications.

Content and photography

Development and content production are different services.

If you need professional copywriting, photography, video production, illustrations or product-image editing, include these items in the budget from the beginning.

Delays in receiving content are also a common reason for delayed launches.

Maintenance and updates

A website still requires attention after launch.

Depending on the platform, ongoing work may include:

  • Software updates
  • Plugin or application checks
  • Backups
  • Security monitoring
  • Content changes
  • Performance reviews
  • Form testing
  • Compatibility fixes
  • New landing pages
  • Product updates

Businesses using WordPress should decide who will handle updates and backups after the initial support period. If ongoing support is required, consider a defined WordPress monthly maintenance service.

Website migration and redirects

Redesigning an existing website can require content migration, URL mapping and redirects.

Incorrect migration can create broken links and make existing pages difficult for visitors and search engines to find. Google’s official site-migration guidance recommends preparing URL mappings, implementing permanent redirects and monitoring the website after the move.

Migration work should be included explicitly in a redesign quotation.

Freelancer, agency or in-house developer?

The right delivery model depends on the project.

OptionBest suited forMain advantagePotential limitation
DIY website builderVery small or temporary requirementsLow initial costLimited customization and personal time required
Freelance developerDefined small and medium projectsDirect communication and lower overheadCapacity and availability can vary
Development agencyLarger or multidisciplinary projectsBroader team and structured deliveryHigher cost and more communication layers
In-house developerContinuous product developmentDedicated internal availabilityRecruitment, management and long-term employment cost

An experienced freelance full-stack developer can be a practical middle ground for businesses that need direct technical involvement without the cost structure of a large agency.

However, the individual should be able to explain the complete delivery process—not only the code.

Is a low-cost website always a bad decision?

No.

A low-cost website can be completely reasonable when:

  • The requirement is small
  • A suitable template already exists
  • The business provides finished content
  • No custom functionality is needed
  • The website is temporary
  • The owner understands the limitations

Problems arise when a low-cost quotation is expected to include custom design, copywriting, SEO work, complex forms, integrations, unlimited revisions and ongoing support.

If a quotation is much lower than the others, ask what has been removed or simplified to reach that price.

Common warning signs include:

  • No written scope
  • Unclear page count
  • No responsive-testing commitment
  • No information about licences
  • Full payment requested without defined milestones
  • Domain registered in the developer’s name
  • No code or account handover
  • “Unlimited features” at an unusually low price
  • Guaranteed rankings, traffic or sales

The goal is not to select the highest quotation. It is to select the clearest quotation that properly covers your requirements.

How to prepare for an accurate website quotation

Before contacting a developer, prepare the following information.

Business information

  • What does your company offer?
  • Who is your target customer?
  • Which locations do you serve?
  • What action should visitors take?

Website requirements

  • Is this a new website or redesign?
  • What pages do you need?
  • Do you need a blog?
  • Do you sell products?
  • Do users need accounts?
  • Do you need forms, bookings or payments?
  • Does the website need to connect with another system?

Content status

  • Is the written content ready?
  • Do you have brand guidelines?
  • Are the logo and images available?
  • Does old website content need migration?

Practical constraints

  • What is your approximate budget?
  • Is there a fixed launch date?
  • Who will approve the design and content?
  • Who will maintain the website after launch?

A clear brief does not lock you into a particular solution. It helps the developer identify the appropriate solution and prepare a more accurate estimate.

A practical example

In my development work across WordPress websites, Shopify stores, landing pages, dashboards and custom CRM systems, the most accurate quotations begin with the business workflow—not with a request such as “I need a modern five-page website.”

A five-page company website with standard content and a contact form is very different from a five-page website that includes user accounts, location search, appointment booking and CRM integration.

[Jagjeet: add a real example of a project where the page count appeared small but custom functionality, migration or revision requirements affected the final scope.]

A genuine example here will help readers understand why a developer needs more than a page count to calculate the cost.

Questions to ask before accepting a quotation

Use this checklist when comparing developers:

  • Can I see relevant live projects?
  • Is the design template-based or custom?
  • What pages are included?
  • How many revision rounds are included?
  • Who will provide and upload the content?
  • Are premium licences included?
  • What third-party subscriptions will I need?
  • Is responsive testing included?
  • Are forms and integrations tested?
  • Who owns the domain and hosting accounts?
  • Will I receive administrator and source-code access?
  • What happens if the scope changes?
  • What support is included after launch?
  • What maintenance will be required?
  • What is specifically excluded from the price?

The answers should be written into the proposal or scope document.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic website cost in India?

A basic DIY or template-led website may cost under ₹30,000, while a professionally delivered small-business website may require a budget from approximately ₹50,000 to ₹3,00,000.

The price depends on the number of pages, template customization, content, responsive work, forms, testing and support.

How much does a five-page website cost in India?

A five-page website does not have one standard price.

A basic five-page template setup may be relatively inexpensive. A custom-designed five-page business website with original UI, content support, forms, responsive testing and performance work will cost more.

Ask the developer to specify what is included on each page instead of comparing only the page count.

How much does a WordPress website cost?

The WordPress software itself does not require a commercial licence, but development, design, hosting, premium plugins, content and maintenance still involve costs.

A template-based WordPress setup will normally cost less than a custom theme or custom plugin build. You can review my custom WordPress development services to understand the types of WordPress work that may be included.

How much does an eCommerce website cost in India?

An eCommerce website generally costs more than an informational website because it may require product setup, collections, filters, payments, shipping, transactional emails, tax configuration and order-flow testing.

Custom store design, product volume and third-party applications can increase the cost further. Businesses considering Shopify can explore my Shopify development services.

How much does a custom web application cost?

Custom portals, CRM systems, dashboards and web applications are usually quoted after requirements discovery.

The estimate depends on user roles, database structure, screens, business rules, integrations, reports, security requirements and testing. These projects should not be priced like ordinary marketing websites.

If your requirement involves leads, customers, tasks, reports or custom workflows, review my custom CRM development services.

How long does website development take?

A tightly scoped landing page may take a few days or weeks. A business website can take several weeks, while custom eCommerce stores and web applications may take several months.

The timeline depends on content readiness, feedback speed, integrations, revisions and project complexity.

A very short promised timeline should be checked against what will actually be designed and tested.

Should I choose the cheapest website quotation?

Choose the quotation that provides the clearest fit for your requirements.

A low price can be appropriate for a simple project. It becomes risky when important items such as custom design, mobile testing, licences, content, migration, support or ownership are unclear.

Does paying more guarantee a better website?

No.

A higher price may reflect more experienced people, deeper discovery, custom design, testing and project management—but price alone does not guarantee quality.

Review the developer’s live work, process, scope, communication and handover terms before deciding.

Conclusion: Plan the website before comparing prices

The website development cost in India depends on much more than the number of pages.

Design approach, platform, functionality, content, integrations, responsive behaviour, testing, migration and ongoing support all affect the final quotation.

Before hiring a developer:

  1. Define the website’s business purpose.
  2. Prepare an initial page and feature list.
  3. Separate essential features from future ideas.
  4. Clarify content and migration responsibilities.
  5. Compare quotations line by line.
  6. Confirm ownership, support and recurring costs.

A properly planned website does not need every possible feature. It needs the right structure and functionality for the business at its current stage.

If you are planning a WordPress website, Shopify store, corporate website, landing page, CRM or dashboard, share your requirements through my website development service page.

Include your current website URL, required pages, desired functionality, approximate budget and preferred timeline. I can then help you identify an appropriate platform and define a practical development scope without making unrealistic promises about rankings, traffic or revenue.
