Drupal to WordPress for Japan Organisations: Preserve News Archives and Publication Context
A migration guide focused on preserving the context that makes an established news archive understandable.

An established news archive tells readers when an announcement was published, who issued it and where it belongs in the organisation’s history. For a Japan organisation moving from Drupal to WordPress, importing article text is only one part of the task. The migration should preserve approved publication context and useful archive routes rather than make every old announcement appear newly issued.
Inventory publication metadata independently
List the source identifiers, original publication dates, authors or issuing teams and relevant classifications. Distinguish an original date from a later correction or import event. The business should decide what remains visible after migration.
The WordPress post schema includes date and modification fields as separate information. Map the source meanings deliberately rather than assign the import time to every historical record.
- Stable source reference.
- Approved publication and update context.
- Author or issuing team.
- Archive classification and language.
Review dates with the editorial owner
Agree how local publication dates and system timestamps are interpreted. A date-only announcement should not shift unexpectedly because of an inappropriate conversion. Include records near a day boundary in the migration sample where relevant.
Do not infer a missing historical date from a filename or a page’s current modification time without review. Record unresolved values for the owner to decide. An accurate exception is better than fabricated precision.
Preserve useful archive journeys
Identify the year, topic or organisational archive routes readers actually use. Some may have introductions or incoming links of their own. Map those public destinations as well as individual article addresses.
Check navigation and related links from an old announcement into the new site. A valid article page can still leave a visitor at an empty archive or a wrong-language counterpart. The acceptance sample should include the surrounding discovery path.
Keep images and attachments connected
An announcement may refer to an approved PDF or use an image that provides important context. Retain those relationships and assess their public addresses. Copying text while omitting its attachment can make the historical record misleading or incomplete.
Decide how corrections, withdrawn resources and unavailable files are represented. The editorial owner approves the publication treatment; the developer implements the agreed destination and records unresolved migration items.
Reconcile history before launch
Review counts by year and category, then open representative records. Include a corrected article, a language counterpart, an attachment and a record with missing metadata. Ask the editor to update a migrated item using the agreed native editing controls.
- Historical publication context remains deliberate.
- Imports do not falsely appear as new announcements.
- Archive links reach useful destinations.
- Attachments remain connected.
- Exceptions have an editorial decision.
Can the archive design be simplified? Yes. Agree the changed categories and routes before migration so simplification does not accidentally discard useful context.

Discuss a scoped implementation
Send the current Drupal archive, representative records and the publication fields your team needs to retain. We can scope a sample import and archive review before the full WordPress migration.
