A Sitecore to WordPress migration often begins with a publishing or platform-cost discussion. The difficult decisions sit behind the public pages: shared content, language versions, search, personalisation, approval rules and connected systems. Marketing and IT need to agree which of those capabilities the replacement must support.

My Sitecore to WordPress migration service is offered as an assessed WordPress rebuild, with the source access and dependencies confirmed during discovery. This guide helps your team prepare a brief that distinguishes a manageable website project from a wider enterprise-system replacement.

Define the business boundary before choosing a replacement

List the sites, languages and audience journeys in scope. Your marketing website may be one consumer of a larger content or integration setup. Decide whether WordPress replaces that public website, becomes the content source, or forms part of a broader architecture. Other applications need their own transition decisions.

Write the problem you want to solve in practical terms. Faster publishing, clearer editor controls or a simpler public-site structure can be useful goals. A lower licensing line does not by itself demonstrate that the replacement supports every requirement. Compare the total implementation and operating responsibilities.

Give each enterprise feature a disposition

Use a feature register instead of assuming every capability transfers with page content. Record whether each feature will remain elsewhere, be rebuilt, be simplified or be retired. Include an owner who can approve that choice. This keeps a redesign from silently removing something a business team relies on.

Feature to reviewQuestion for the proposal
Personalisation and audience rulesWhich experiences are essential, and how will their replacement be verified?
Search and content discoveryWhat should be searchable, and who maintains the index?
Languages and regional variantsWhich content variants, URLs and publishing responsibilities move?
Approvals and accessWho may edit, review and publish each content type?
External systemsWhat endpoints, events and record flows must continue?

The alternatives may include WordPress configuration, custom development or retaining a separate service. Any licences, integration work and specialist involvement belong in the scope.

Treat source items and page layouts as different inputs

Sitecore’s content serialization documentation describes transferring selected content items into a project representation. It is a Sitecore tooling workflow, not a finished WordPress site. Product, version and implementation determine which extraction options are appropriate.

A content item may be referenced by multiple pages or shared across language variants. The migration needs a mapping from source identifiers and fields to the destination structures. Separately inventory renderings, components and behaviour that determine what visitors see. Do not estimate both tasks from the public page count alone.

Use a demanding pilot rather than a simple homepage

Select a representative page with shared content, an important language variation and a relevant integration. Rebuild its destination structure and editing workflow in staging. Have marketing review content and appearance while IT checks the agreed data and system boundaries.

  • Check that shared information stays maintainable rather than becoming disconnected copies.
  • Validate language-specific URLs, content and fallback decisions.
  • Test the agreed form or integration behaviour and error path.
  • Ask an editor to make and publish a routine update.

A pilot should produce evidence for the wider estimate: mappings, unresolved questions and acceptance checks. It should not be presented as proof that every enterprise feature is already solved.

Make release and recovery responsibilities explicit

A release plan should name who controls DNS, hosting, source changes, integration credentials and final sign-off. Agree a content freeze, any final update transfer and the conditions that would trigger recovery. Define how the source site remains available until the release has been accepted.

Review the important URL inventory, redirect destinations, internal links, canonicals and crawl settings. Validate enquiry routes and connected systems after the switch. Monitoring and maintenance need owners; they are not completed merely because the new homepage loads. See the WordPress migration service overview for the broader delivery stages.

Prepare the information needed for an enterprise migration proposal

Send the public website, actual Sitecore product and version, approximate content volume, languages and a feature register. Identify who can provide authorised exports and answer source-system questions. Include the requirements that must remain unchanged and the parts you are willing to simplify.

A scoped quote can then distinguish assessment, content transformation, templates, custom functionality, integrations and release support. Timeline and cost follow those decisions. Review enterprise WordPress development options alongside the migration brief if governance and scale are part of your requirements.

If you need a remote development partner for the WordPress side, request a Sitecore migration assessment. I’ll review the brief, clarify specialist dependencies and propose an implementation boundary that your marketing and IT teams can evaluate.
