A move from Shopware to Shopify is a platform decision as well as a content transfer. For a German merchant, the useful first assessment identifies the catalogue structure, customer relationships and operational behaviour that must survive. An export containing product names does not prove that the destination can reproduce pricing, variant selection or the history the support team needs.

Define the reason for the move

Write down the specific problem the new platform should solve: editing, integration, maintenance or a product requirement. Compare that requirement with improving the existing store before committing to a migration. A platform change brings content and operating work that should have a clear purpose.

List the important visitor and staff tasks. The first sample should show the requirement that motivates the move, not only an attractive replacement homepage.

Inventory the available export and identifiers

Shopware’s import/export documentation describes CSV exports and profiles for different data. Assess the installed version, extensions and actual export fields before assuming the files contain every business relationship.

Retain stable source identifiers in the mapping record. Product, variant, customer and order references may need to remain traceable even where destination database identifiers differ. Record missing fields and unsupported behaviours explicitly.

  • Product and variant references.
  • Categories, attributes and media relationships.
  • Customer and company relationships.
  • The order history staff must access.

Map the required behaviour to Shopify’s supported model

Shopware customer groups, pricing rules and product options should be mapped to the intended Shopify experience, not copied on the assumption that matching field labels mean equivalent behaviour. Choose representative products and buyers before deciding how to migrate the full catalogue.

Shopify’s product CSV documentation provides one supported catalogue route. Company relationships, negotiated pricing and historical records need their own assessment. Review native B2B features and plan limits if the store serves business accounts.

Custom source extensions do not move with a product export. Identify a supported replacement, scoped app or integration, or an approved retirement decision. The merchant should understand what changes operationally and which subscriptions remain after launch.

Plan customer access and historical records

Identify what customers need after launch and what staff need for support. Account access, saved addresses and order history may have separate migration paths and limitations. Credentials and sensitive records require an agreed controlled process; do not collect an unrestricted production export through a public form.

Keep customer communication and any account-transition steps under the merchant’s approval. A test import should not unexpectedly notify real customers or create operational actions. Those side effects belong in the migration plan.

Review a complete sample before the bulk move

Choose a product with variants, a special pricing case, a returning customer and a historical order. Check their destination behaviour with authorised sample data. Reconcile relationships and totals, then follow the public purchase journey using approved test arrangements.

Map old product and category addresses to useful destinations and agree the final update process before launch. Preserve a recovery arrangement and record who authorises the cutover.

Can every Shopware feature be copied automatically? No. The assessment should establish what transfers, what needs implementation and what should remain in another system. That evidence supports a meaningful estimate.

Discuss a scoped implementation

Share the Shopware version, representative product structure, extensions and the reason for moving. We can scope a Shopify migration sample before estimating a complete store rebuild.
