For an Australian merchant, Shopify maintenance should distinguish theme presentation from store-wide data and application changes. An unpublished theme can support a design review without becoming an isolated copy of the whole business. Start with the change you need, the live order workflow and the review evidence that will support publication. I provide Shopify theme, app-configuration and scoped integration support around that defined requirement.

Identify the change and the affected store journeys

List the specific theme, app or configuration change and the journeys it can affect: product selection, cart, customer accounts, checkout presentation and order handover. A homepage preview alone does not establish that the store still behaves as the merchant expects.

Shopify is a hosted commerce platform. Maintenance here means supported theme, app and store-configuration work within Shopify’s hosted platform. Record who owns each connected system and the authorised testing arrangements before changing it.

Use an unpublished theme for the presentation review

Shopify’s theme management guidance describes managing theme copies and choosing which theme is live. A duplicate or unpublished theme can support review of presentation changes before release.

It is not an isolated copy of every store record, app setting or operational connection. Products, orders and some app or account settings may be shared at store level. Define which actions affect the live store and avoid treating a preview as permission to change those records.

Separate theme release from store-wide data changes

The release plan should state whether it publishes a reviewed theme, changes an app configuration or updates catalogue data. Those are different operations with different consequences. A theme rollback should not be described as restoring all products, orders and connected application state.

Shopify’s theme update guidance also makes custom changes and compatibility part of the review. Identify custom sections and integrations that need checking against the proposed version instead of assuming every update preserves every modification.

Keep live orders and external actions visible

Normal business activity continues while a theme is reviewed. Define how authorised test orders are identified and how payments, customer emails and fulfilment actions are controlled. A previewed storefront can still lead to operational actions if the chosen journey permits them.

Use only approved testing arrangements. If an order connector retries or fails, staff need a traceable reference and a review route. Reverting theme files does not reverse a warehouse instruction or a payment already processed by another system.

Agree a release and recovery decision

Record the reviewed theme or configuration, the person authorising publication and the recovery action available for that change. Distinguish a presentation regression from an app failure, a stock problem or a failed order transfer so staff know which owner to contact.

Include product selection, mobile layout, important app widgets, cart behaviour and the supported checkout route in the acceptance sample. Note what was inspected, what was tested under authorisation and which dependencies require a separate merchant-controlled check.

Request a scoped Shopify support proposal

A useful maintenance agreement names the changes covered, expected review evidence, communication arrangements and paid dependencies. Separate routine theme work from application development and data migration. Work on an existing theme or app may also depend on its licence and vendor support.

Is a duplicate theme a complete backup? No. Its purpose and reach must be assessed separately from product, order and app data. Start with the Shopify store review checklist and define the first improvement you need rather than commission an unspecified platform overhaul.
